Sprunger, Joel G. M.S., Purdue University, December 2013. Attitudes Toward the Use of Violence and Partner Directed Aggression. Major Professor: Christopher Eckhardt. The present prospective study examined implicit and explicit attitudes toward the use of violence and their capacity to predict past and future partner-directed aggression in a nonclinical sample. Implicit violence attitudes were measured using a modified version of the Implicit Association Test. A battery of commonly-utilized explicit selfreport measures indexed explicit attitudes toward intimate partner violence (IPV). Measurement of violence attitudes occurred prior to engaging in the Articulated Thoughts in Simulated Situations behavioral aggression paradigm. Participants (N = 81) were randomly assigned to conditions of imagined provocative (n = 48) or nonprovocative (n = 33) relationship scenarios and given the option to stick pins in dolls representing characters depicted in the scenarios. Simultaneously, participants “thought out loud” into a microphone about their thoughts. After the scenario, participants were provided with a list of physically and verbally aggressive behaviors and asked to indicate, if given the opportunity, their desire to have engaged in each behavior while they listened to the scenario. The results indicated that individuals with a history of recent psychological IPV perpetration showed more positive implicit

Evaluating preschool children's attitudes and beliefs about intimate partner violence.
Few studies have considered how intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts children's overarching attitudes and beliefs about the prevalence and acceptability of aggression. This pilot study included 92 preschool children exposed to IPV who reported on attitudes and beliefs about violence using a new, theoretically driven measure. Findings illustrate that preschoolers were able to respond reliably...

A multivariate approach was used to determine the pattern of predictors associated with engaging in dating violence. Studies of violence in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings typically focus on partner aggression (PA) although non-partner aggression (NPA) is also a common problem. This study examines potentially distinct paths of distal and proximal risk factors related to aggression towards non-partners (NPA) and partners (PA) among a SUD treatment sample. The sample included 176 adults reportin...

متن کاملIntimate Partner Violence in the First 2 Years of Life: Implications for Toddlers' Behavior Regulation.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is prevalent in families with young children and challenges their healthy development. This study examined characteristics of IPV (e.g., mother- vs. partner-perpetrated, types and severity) and investigated potential effects of IPV on toddlers' behavioral regulation in a sample of families at risk for IPV. We also examined whether maternal depression and child-re...
